Before Church First install.
One Church (OC) came to us with a huge need across the full Audio, Video, and Lighting spectrum. They were experiencing growth in their church and planning to host future provincial events. They were using a major brand all-in-one tower array system that was undersized for the space and coverage needed. Their projector had reached end of life and needed replacement as well. Lastly, a robust front lighting system was required to upgrade the platform and altar area for bible study nights and allow for a wider coverage area for their weekly streamed services.
Church First consulted with OC to cover all these needs and designed a solution to address these challenges. Logistically, our main challenge was being further away and obtaining room measurements and site photos for the installation.
For audio we used EASE FOCUS to model various flown line array systems to choose the best solution for the space. The QSC KLA line array system was chosen for its ability to cover the space with the appropriate amount of SPL, its integrated rigging, and its performance to value ratio. Our install team developed custom rigging points with industry standard materials and fixed to a substantial wood beam structure.
Video was a laser projector upgrade that had sufficient luminance in a bright room to achieve the vibrant visuals required for the video team. Retrofitting of the existing projector mounting pole was successful, along with additional control lines.
For lighting we added two new ideal horizontal pole positions sized to accommodate 2" truss mount adaptors. These horizontals supported 4 new Chauvet Pro Ovation lighting fixtures. This greatly increased lighting coverage to the clients liking, and allowed for their teaching staff to be much more dynamic in positioning while remaining well covered. In addition, these particular fixtures are full RGBWA-Lime, allowing for dynamic control for events, as well as precise calibration for video.
Abundant Life's team reached out to us with a need to upgrade their existing analog console and build out their wireless microphone and body pack systems.
This project was an audio only upgrade with light network infrastructure needs to accommodate digital protocols for the new digital console and digital stage box systems.
Budget was given and through discussing current technology and its ability to scale with the church's needs, we were able to increase the budget and have a system that the client would be happy with across a longer projected lifespan.
For the main digital console, we installed an Allen & Heath SQ-5 with two AB168 stage boxes. Allen & Heath is a great choice at this value point, and will match Abundant Life's in person audio and livestreaming needs, both week to week and for seasonal special events for years to come.
For wireless microphones, we installed 6 channels of Shure SLXD, with 5 BETA58 handhelds and 1 headset condenser microphone on a beltpack for the lead pastor. Many lead and preaching pastors comment on the handsfree benefits of a headset microphone, as well as the excellent pickup coverage and control provided by this system. A full RF spectrum scan was completed, and the new SLXD units were carefully integrated into the available bandwidth onsite. Also, a full power sequencing system was installed, allowing for safe power cycling of the new console and wireless with a single switch.
Finally, we held a custom 2 day training workshop tailored to technical skill of team, where we worked with leadership and volunteers to teach both the new gear and best practices for it in their context. As part of that process, our installation team walked with them through their first service with the new gear, and helped lead towards a successful outcome.
Custom built Equipment rack for New Sennheiser Wireless and Allen & Heath Stagebox with microphone storage and cable passthrough.
Emmanuel Gospel Lighthouse reached out to us when construction was nearing completion on their new sanctuary. We were able to move quickly to design an audio solution from the ground up to meet their building commissioning deadline. Our goal was to meet the needs of their growing congregation for years to come, while providing volunteer friendly professional tools. We focused primarily on Audio for this integration, using Allen & Heath digital stageboxes, RF Venue Wireless distribution, Sennheiser wireless microphones, EliteCore floorboxes, and Middle Atlantic power supplies and sequencing.
On consultation with EGL, we chose to increase the channel count of their existing GLD console with the installation of a AR2412 digital Stagebox. In addition, we installed 6 custom loaded EliteCore floorboxes to serve inputs and outputs to their band members, as well as allow for event flexibility and future expansion. Each floorbox had between 4 and 6 inputs/outputs, along with an AC outlet for the nearby instrument(s). Each floorbox was in turn wired to the main AR2412, allowing for full analog connections with digital control, without any wires crossing the stage. In addition, we installed 4 Sennheiser EW-D wireless microphones with an RF Venue DISTRO4, which allowed for effective frequency coordination and stability for long into the future. Finally, a Middle Atlantic Power sequencer system was installed, allowing for the entire audio system to be safely powered on and off with a single switch.
After the installation and integration was complete, our team lead a custom training workshop with the EGL team on best practices for them in their context, and left them equipped with the knowledge to succeed.
Before Church First Install
The Pentecostals of Peterborough (POP) came to us with an aged audio system for church was partially broken due to age and lack of maintenance, and was undersized for the room. Due to several blown speaker cones, almost all high frequencies were not being reproduced, causing the main person speaking each service to be difficult to understand. In addition, the room itself had a long reverberation time, again hurting speaking clarity for the message moments. The previous system was also severely undersized, and left large portions of the congregation out of direct coverage of the speakers.
After a consultation process with POP, we came to a 3 phase installation; First of custom acoustic treatment to the entire main sanctuary, second a new line array church speaker system with subwoofers from RCF, and finally an audio console upgrade to match their requirements. After room acoustic measurement and modeling of various speaker solutions, we began installation of 48 custom acoustic absorption and dispersion panels. These panels were each 4 by 8 foot rectangles, fully fire rated and mountable vertically or horizontally. We were able to provide color samples in advance, and the leadership team at POP chose their preferred color, one of over 14 options available.
We then chose the RCF HDL-6A with matching HDL12-AS subwoofers for their exceptional clarity, phase coherence with FIRPHASE processing, and their wide coverage angle. With clarity and coverage such a large priority, especially after missing it for so many years, RCF was a natural choice, and one that matched their available budget. After their house technician installed new power and signal cables to the speaker hang locations, we were successful in deploying the RCF system ahead of schedule, and coverage was as predicted with the modelling.
Finally, a console upgrade and training process was done, with the removal of a functional console, and the integration of an Allen & Heath SQ-5 in its place. The POP had recently upgraded to that previous console, but it was not meeting their input/output or their processing needs. After integration with their existing copper snake system, our team held a custom 2 day training workshop tailored to the technical skill of their team, where we worked with leadership and volunteers to teach best practices for them in their services.
We were very glad to work with the Pentecostals of Peterborough; It was a joy to equip them with functional and even exceptional tools to further their mission. Hearing the reports of exceptional clarity for the speaking moments even in the very farthest corners of the room, and experiencing a dynamic and engaging worship time without distraction was a major win for us.
